dear Anonymous 1:24 PM, questions can be from any poem that you've learnt in form 1, 2 & 3. that means, out of 6 poems that u've learnt, one poem will come out in PMR.

Anonymous 12:14 PM, yes, according to my knowledge, drama & short story will not be tested in exams. however, dont just ignore them. u can still use the two components to let ss have fun in learning English. based on my experience, drama gv ss opportunity to improve their speaking skills, be creative & develop their confidence :)

Teacher Nuha said...

Dear Anonymous 1:00 AM, only form 3 novels will be tested in PMR paper 2.

Anonymous 1:24 AM, (40+50)/90x100 = your total marks

Salam teacher. With the new format for 2012, do you have any insight to what will the question for the novel be? Apparently the marks are higher but the question will only be just one. Thanks for your assistance.

Teacher Nuha said...

Waalaikumussalam. I have no idea what question will come out in 2012 PMR. Since the marks are higher, students need to write as many points as they can & elaborate their points by giving more detailed textual evidence. Sorry, cant' help you much.

Anonymous said...

salam, teacher ... how many points is enough ..? can I score with two points and one evidence for each points? thank u very much teacher ...

Teacher Nuha said...

wslm anonymous, thanks 4 asking the question. to get high marks, it is advisable to give as many evidence as you can. if u give 2 reasons & only write 1 evidence for each reason, chances to get high marks are slim.

salam teacher, from the comment above, u mention the form 3 novel will be tested in PMR 2012 only! how about the form 1 novel? Thus, form 1 novel will not be tested in PMR 2012? thanks if u can clear my query:)

Teacher Nuha said...

waalaimussalam. yes, only the novels learnt in form 3 will be tested in pmr. the novels learnt in form 1, short stories & drama will not be tested in pmr. only one of the poems learnt in form 1,2 & 3 will come out in Paper 2 Section B. Hope you're clear abt the format now :)

salam, teacher thank you for your reply on how to score higher marks for the novel question...teacher, I have another question on how to score higher marks for section A - so far my score for paper 1 is quite good but when it comes to writing, I tend to comment so many grammatical errors due to my long sentences .. is it possible to score with simple and compound sentence only .. please teacher, I need your opinion on this ... and thank you very much, teacher ...

Teacher Nuha said...

waalaikumussalam anonymous,

to avoid gross grammatical errors in your essay, it's best to write simple/compound sentences rather long sentences. Use interesting expressions/similes/idioms to make your essay outstanding. for example:

instead of writing: I am happy.
u can write: I am ecstatic. OR I am as happy as a lark.

ordinary sentence: The place has lots of plants.
extraordinary sentence: The place is surrounded with lush greenery. The place is the only green lung in the city.

this is a technique that you can use to turn an ordinary simple sentence into an EXTRAordinary short sentence. practice makes perfect. u can google for idioms & similes that u can use in writing essays.

All the best!

Hello teacher nuha,

You don't have to memorize the poem as it will be included in the question paper. :)

Hello teacher Nuha,

How to get the 12 marks in Novel? Can you give an example. How long do i need to write? Any words count in particular?

mcm mana nk buat essay report psai complaining something mcm kantin kotor..arghh,frust sunggoh.saya cr kat internet tp,suma bg dlm bentuk informal letter sgala bagai.. :(

Teacher Nuha said...

Dear Anonymous,
Last year, the full marks for answering novel are 10. 10 marks were awarded to those who could write a page long - focused & detailed answer. Starting from this year, the full marks are 12. I recommend that you write a detailed & focused answer in about one and a half page long. I'll share some examples in my later post.

Dear waney, there are a number of reference books that give examples on how to write a letter of complaint. Don't fret too much ok :)

Anonymous said...

hi. so that means we need at least three textual evidence?

Teacher Nuha said...

Hi. Give as many evidence as you can.. The more evidence you give, the higher the marks you'll get. Try to avoid spelling and grammatical errors in your answer. All the best!

what will come out in NOVEL question? it is theme/moral value / character/ setting..
PLEASEE help me what would i focus on??

Teacher Nuha said...

Dear ayim/Wicky,
Nobody will know what questions are going to come out in the PMR English 2012 until the exam time. Even though there are only a few hours left before PMR, you can still make a miracle.

For novel, I suggest that you study one main theme. Actually the themes, moral values, characters & settings in a novel are interrelated (berkaitan antara satu sama lain).

Let's say that the main theme in a novel is "Determination". If the question asks you to write about a character who is determined to achieve success, you can use the textual evidence from the theme "Determination". For example:
A character who is determined to achieve success is.... (give textual evidence for "determination" to support your answer)

If the question asks you to write about a moral value or a lesson learnt from the story, you can still write the textual evidence from the theme "Determination". For example:
A moral value / lesson learnt from the novel is we must be a determined person. I learn to be a determined person from the main character..... (name the character)
(write the rest of the answer by giving textual evidence from the theme "determination")

Depending on the question, textual evidences are any events, settings, related characters, etc which can be used to support your answer.

To get some ideas on how to answer the novel question, go to:

Do your best!
