PBS (School Based Assessment)

Recently, the Selangor Education Department with the collaboration of the Sepang District Education Department held the Form 2 School Based Assessment Meeting. The meeting was held at SMK Seri Sepang from 16 - 18 October. The food was really nice and the toilets.. Yes, I would give 7 stars for the super clean, well-kept, hotel-like toilet.

I was so glad that I was chosen to be as part of the meeting team. Before attending this meeting, I was very negative about Pentaksiran Berasaskan Sekolah (PBS) as I didn't really understand how to incorporate PBS into the teaching and learning of English. Attending the meeting have shed some lights on PBS and how to execute it throughout the year. The meeting has lifted my spirit and made me more positive.

I have to thanks our JU, Puan Zuraidah Zubir, SMKD and the Sepang District officers, Puan Fatimah and Puan Machitah, who had patiently and enthusiastically enlightened our misconceptions and answered our enquiries on PBS. A million thanks to my team - the representatives from the Sepang District schools for sharing great ideas. All of you are wonderful, superb, creative and helpful! I'm happy to meet your acquaintance. It's just that I feel a wee bit of regret for not taking pictures with these beautiful people.

I would like to share the PBS materials that I got from the meeting:

I hope that more teachers out there could share their teaching and learning English materials, professional development materials, etc. for the benefit of our education. Email your materials at nuhazyun@yahoo.com or share your blog address with us.

My reply:

Read the text below and complete the following task. [PMR 2011]

The newspaper is an extremely useful learning tool to students today. Besides being easily available and affordable, it offers them numerous benefits.

A survey carried out on the benefits of the newspaper clearly shows that students who read the newspapers have better awareness of the world around them. This is because they are better informed of the current issues happening around the world. Hence, they become more knowledgeable.

As language proficiency seems to be a problem amongst students these days, reading the newspaper also helps them improve their language skills. As such, they are able to put into practice what they have learnt.

Meanwhile, once outside the classroom, students can use the newspaper to be a continuous source of education and information. For example, it can be used to obtain reference material or ideas for their school assignments.

The newspaper today also motivates students to learn because it contains educational supplements that help them with their lessons. Besides, they also encourage students to develop their thinking skills through extensive reading.

It is without doubt that the newspaper is beneficial to students. As such, we should encourage them to read the newspaper every day.

Write a summary on how the newspaper can be a useful tool to students.

Your summary must:
not be more than 60 words, including the 10 given words below
be in continuous writing (not note form)
be written in one paragraph

Use your own words as far as possible without changing its original meaning. Begin your summary as follows:

The newspaper is a useful tool that helps students to……

Steps to answer a summary question:

Step 1:
Read the text once to get an idea on what the text is all about.

Step 2:
Read the question. Identify the keywords.
Write a summary on HOW the newspaper can be a useful tool to students.

Step 3:
Identify the content points. Read again the text. Read each sentence in the text one by one. Ask whether the sentence answers the question “HOW the newspaper can be a useful tool to students”?

Sentence from the text
Does the sentence answers the question “HOW the newspaper can be a useful tool to students”?

What is the content point?
(highlight or underline the content point)
* yellow – main points
* blue – supporting points

C5 - motivates students to learn
C6 - encourage students to develop their thinking skills through extensive reading

Important:
If you are able to identify both main and supporting points, write either one in the summary.
It is not encouraged to write the supporting points. Sometimes, a supporting point is NOT accepted as the content point!

Step 4:
Write the summary. Write five (5) content points only. Begin your summary with the ten (10) words given. Copy the points EXACTLY from the text to avoid sentence errors and changing the meaning of the original text. Use sequence connectors like next, then, moreover, furthermore, lastly, etc.

The newspaper is a useful tool that helps students to have better awareness of the world around them. (C1) They become more knowledgeable. (C2) Moreover, reading the newspaper also helps them improve their language skills. (C3) Furthermore, students can use the newspaper to be a continuous source of education and information. (C4) Finally, the newspaper today also motivates students to learn. (C5)

Step 5:
Count the number of words and write it at the bottom right of the summary. Make sure your summary is NOT MORE than 60 words.

The newspaper is a useful tool that helps students to have better awareness of the world around them. They become more knowledgeable. Moreover, reading the newspaper also helps them improve their language skills. Furthermore, students can use the newspaper to be a continuous source of education and information. Finally, the newspaper today also motivates students to learn.
(57 words)

Step 6:
Read your answer again. Make sure there are no spelling errors.

Marks for the above summary:

The newspaper is a useful tool that helps students to have better awareness of the world around them. They become more knowledgeable. Moreover, reading the newspaper also helps them improve their language skills. Furthermore, students can use the newspaper to be a continuous source of education and information. Finally, the newspaper today also motivates students to learn.

Content points – 5 marks
Language – 3 marks
Total marks – 8 marks

Hi!Teacher Nuha!I'm ***.:) happy
1.What is the meaning'a whale of a time'?
2.how to use 'catch a glimpse of'?
Teacher, can you give an example?
thank you, teacher!:x lovestruck

My reply:

Hi ***! Thanks for asking the questions.

1. "have a whale of a time" is an idiom which means "to have an exciting or fun time". For example:
  • I hope that you will have a whale of a time during your vacation in Pulau Pangkor. (I hope that you will have an exciting and fun time during your vacation in Pulau Pangkor.)
  • We had a whale of a time at Cameron Highlands. (We had an exciting and fun time at Cameron Highlands.)

2. If you catch a glimpse of someone or something, you see someone or something briefly (for a short time). For example:
  • Rahim caught a glimpse of a black bag on his way to school this morning. (Rahim saw a black bag on his way to school. He did not pay much attention to the bag.)
  • Chan caught a glimpse of an old lady as he was walking home. (Chan saw an old lady for a short time. He did not pay much attention to the old lady.)
Hope I've helped.

Teacher Nuha.

Study at the last minute - Get an 'A'?

Some students prefer to wait until the last moment to revise for an exam. Why? It's not a good habit. It's unhealthy for them. I was wondering, what have they been doing in the past months? Why procrastinate? Whatever reasons that they have, I pity these students. Always remember, we should make hay while the sun shines. For all "last minuters", maybe you can get some motivation from Bill Gates :)

A student sent a message:

Anonymous said...
is there any chance to get an a for english if i do revision a day before pmr?

My reply:

Well, studying at the last minute is not a good and healthy habit. Students can get panicky thinking that there are lots to study for the exam. However, miracles can happen.

For guided writing, focus on the format for each type of essay - report, article, informal letter.

For literature (novel), you can study one theme. I blogged about this topic yesterday. Go to:

For poem, there are no other ways but to study all poems. However, stress more on the form 3 poems.

All the best!

Hello teacher Nuha! how are you? I'm a big fan of your blog because it really help me a lot. I get B in my trial exam paper. I wrote an essay yesterday, and I was wondering can you please check it for me? Hope you don't mind teacher (; The full marks of essay is 25

You and your friends went for a trip to the National Park recently. Based on the pictures and notes below, write a recount about your experience there.

1. arrived - chalet - checked in - unpacked

2. boat ride - crossed river - visited - Orang Asli settlement

3. cave - explored - waterfall - swam

4. jungle trekking - flora and fauna - took photographs - returned

Last Saturday, my friends and I went for a trip to the National Park. The trip was organized by 3 Abu Bakar. We went there by bus. The journey took about 2 hours. We chose National Park because we want to get away for a few days after a stressful week of final examination. The purpose of this trip was to let us appreciate the beauty of nature and at the same time learn more about flora and fauna species found there.

On arrival at National Park, we checked in at the chalet. The chalet was small yet beautiful. There was no television and entertainment. Luckily, my friends brought laptops, games and cards. We unpacked our things and prepared for the next activity.

Our first activity was boat ride. We crossed river to visit the Orang Asli settlement. It was a unique experience as we got a chance to learn their culture and how they lived. At that time, we knew the Orang asli have equally varied occupations and ways of life.

The next activity was cave exploring. The cave was very dark but luckily we brought torchlight to explore what was in there. While we were walking, we saw

a population of bat hanging upside down. The supervisor in charge told us that the bats were sleeping. They slept during the day and find food at night. We all spellbound on how they slept without falling. After a while, we found a waterfall. We make hay while the sun shines by took a dip in the waterfall. It was breathtaking with a beautiful scenery, chipping birds and cool crystal clear water. We all shrieked and splashed each other as the icy water stung or bare skin. It was definitely a relief from stress from the intense weather and exhausted day. How could we resist such a great temptation? We saw a lot of fish swam around full of life. We catch the fishes for barbeque at night. We decided to wrap our day as the sun started to disappeared.

On the next morning, we went for jungle trekking. This activity not only gave the rush of adrenaline but also built our stamina. All of us were fascinated at seeing the wild animals, plants and rich biodiversity found in Malaysia. The flora and fauna were very beautiful and colourful. My friend, Shasnaa screamed as she saw a huge milipede. We all burst into tears. We took photographs to parcel these unique experience. It was cooled and refreshing in the vegetation. The fresh air that surrounds the area was good for us to recover form hustle and bustle city of life. It is a pity this vegetation are facing greater danger of being lost to development. Many people do not realize that it is a real gems. We returned to the chalet as the clouds started to roll in. Thank god we had the chance to explore the jungle.

On the last day, we woke up early and packed our things to go home. All of us craved to go for another trip as soon as possible.

My reply:

  • a population of bats
  • spellbound
  • made hay while the sun shines
  • breathtaking
  • crystal clear
  • resist such a great temptation
  • rush of adrenaline
  • fascinated
  • rich biodiversity
  • the vegetation
  • the hustle and bustle of the city of life
  • a real gem in the jungle
  • darkness started to roll in
  • craved

Comments:
  • Your essay contains a lot of good and interesting expressions. Excellent!
  • Interesting style of writing. Keep up!
  • A recount must be written mostly in the past tense. After writing an essay, make sure to check that you've used the correct tenses.
  • The singular and plural for fish is "fish" not fishes :)
  • Avoid combining a lot of different ideas in a sentence. This is where students always make sentence errors. For example: "It was breathtaking with a beautiful scenery, chipping birds and cool crystal clear water." Write about the waterfall in a different sentence. Then, write about the birds.
  • Make sure that the articles (a, an, the), the prepositions (at, of, from, in, on, etc) and other grammatical items are written correctly.

I pray that you'll succeed with flying colours ***!

Teacher Nuha.
